We are a world class School both in teaching and research. We teach a wide range of basic and specialist courses. In the last Teaching Quality Assessment we were rated Excellent.

In spite of the modest size of the university we graduate large numbers of mathematicians and statisticians. Over the last few years our Senior Honours class has been over 100 in size.

In the 2009 Guardian University Guide we were ranked Top in Scotland for Mathematics and Statistics.

The 2009 Times University Guide also ranked us Top in Scotland (and fourth in the UK).

We have internationally leading research groups in areas such as Fractal Geometry, Computational Algebra, Solar Theory, Fluid Dynamics, Statistical Inference and Ecological Modelling.

St Andrews hosts the MacTutor History of Mathematics archive -- one of the world's largest resources in this area. This is visited by more than 150 000 users per week who download more than 2 000 000 pages.
