FundingThe offer of a university place to undertake research or further study does not carry with it the guarantee of financial support. An application must be made by the student through the university to the grant-awarding body which deals with his or her subject area and must be supported by the school in which study is proposed. Unlike awards for first degrees, those for postgraduate study are awarded on a competitive basis. In general the principal awarding bodies make awards of one year's duration and of three year's duration. The Science Research Councils allocate some of their studentships to schools automatically, and these are known as Quota Awards. The following is a brief guide to the main grant-awarding bodies to which application for grants should be made through the University.
The SAAS offers annually a number of studentships for full-time research and advanced postgraduate study in subjects in the Faculties of Arts and Divinity for students ordinarily resident in Scotland. EU nationals who intend to study at a Scottish University are eligible to apply for a "fees only" award. Applications must be submitted by 1st May each year. Further details may be obtained from Postgraduate Admissions. The BA award studentships for postgraduate study and research in the Humanities to graduates of British universities or polytechnics who are ordinarily resident in England, Northern Ireland and Wales. Applications must reach the BA by 1st May each year. Further details may be obtained from Postgraduate Admissions. The Carnegie Trust Scholarships are open to first class honours graduates of Scottish universities for further study in all subjects other than Theology, Philosophy and Classics. Further particulars may be obtained from the Secretary, Carnegie Trust, Cameron House, Abbey Park Place, Dunfermline, Fife, KY12 7PZ. Applications must be lodged not later than 15th March. The BBSRC supports research in agriculture, food, biological sciences and related subjects. Applications must reach the BBSRC by 31st July. The ESRC support postgraduate students in the social sciences. Application must reach the ESRC by 1st May. The EPSRC makes awards for postgraduate study in Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics (including nuclear structure physics but excluding areas assigned to PPARC, see below), Information Technology and Engineering. Applications must reach the EPSRC by 31st July each year. The MRC makes awards for postgraduate study in subjects relevant to medicine. The NERC makes awards for postgraduate study in the environmental sciences. Applications must reach NERC by 31st July each year. The PPARC makes awards for postgraduate study in Particle Physics, Astronomy & Astrophysics and Solar System Science. Applications must reach the PPARC by 31st July each year. Overseas StudentsIn common with other UK universities, financial support is available for overseas students wishing to study at St. Andrews through the Overseas Research Student Awards Scheme (ORS). This scheme provides awards for partial remission of tuition fees to overseas students of outstanding merit and research potential and may be held in any field of study. In St. Andrews only study leading to the degrees of M.Phil., Ph.D. and D.Lang. will qualify for an ORS Award. Further details on ORS Awards may be obtained from Postgraduate Admissions. University AwardsThe university awards a limited number of postgraduate research studentships or top up awards each year. The studentships may be held from one to three years and are of a similar value to the studentships awarded by the research councils. Further details are available from Postgraduate Admissions. In addition to these scholarships the university offers a small number of College scholarships which are open only to graduates of this university. Research studentships and university scholarships are supplemented by a more specialised awards granted by various organisations for study in particular academic subjects. A useful guide to such awards is The Grants Register published by the MacMillan Press. |
