General Information

Programme Specification for Mathematics M.Sc.

Module Requirements:

A total of 180 credits from MT modules at 3000 level and above, including at least 120 credits at 5000 level, of which 60 credits correspond to a dissertation (MT5099) comprising three months full-time study.

Aim:

To provide the necessary skills and training for further study or research in at least one specialist area of Mathematical Science.

Learning Outcomes:

to have a secure foundation of the ideas and techniques that underpin Mathematical Science and have the ability to apply them across a range of areas
to be able to formulate problems mathematically with a critical awareness of the appropriateness of particular models
to have an appreciation of recent developments in certain specialist areas of Mathematics
to be able to understand and present work at the frontiers of research clearly and accurately
to be familiar with basic research skills and apply them to problem solving and independent work
to possess the basis for research work in some branch of Mathematics.

Transferable Skills:

a capacity to analyse problems in an objective and logical manner, using appropriately selected techniques
clarity and coherence of thought and reasoning
the ability to communicate ideas and arguments in a well-structured and reasoned manner
the ability to interpret and evaluate numerical or graphical information.
